Famous Jehovah’s Witnesses

Throughout history, many Jehovah’s Witnesses have been acclaimed for earthly achievements in the arts, science, politics and sports. Sadly, many experienced spiritual shipwreck. But such is not always the case. In this post we take a look at a few of our brothers and sisters in the faith, whom we can look upon proudly, not just for their great accomplishments, but also for continuing to loyally serve Jehovah through thick and thin. Fame and fortune are often enemies of faith, but these brothers and sisters are proof that such is not always the case.

Margaret Keane

Margaret Keane and actress Amy Adams
The name may sound familiar as she was the subject of a movie that just came out at the end of 2014, titled Big Eyes and starring Amy Adams. From her early days in Tennessee, Keane was known amongst her fellow parishioners for her charming drawings of angels, which, as the name of the film suggests, were characterized by their big eyes. Her artwork continued to impress people when she was an adult. Unfortunately, those who appreciated her work didn’t even know she was the artist behind them, as her pieces were sold under her husband’s name in the 60’s. She would eventually take him to court and win in one of the most unique trials in the nation’s history, in which the judge demanded both parties paint a picture of a child in that trademark style – right there in the courtroom. Of course, only Margaret was up to the task.

Of course, the movie doesn't bring out a whole lot of the "knock on Sister Keane's door" that changed her life. She and her daughter were both baptized on August 5, 1972, in the beautiful blue Pacific Ocean of Hawaii. Sister Keane's life story appeared three years after she was baptized in the article: ”My Life as a Famous Artist” (Awake!, July 8, 1975). In that article you'll learn more interesting details not covered in the movie. For example, did you know that the works Sister Keane created before she learned the Truth tended to depict sad-looking children in dark settings. Once she became one of Jehovah's Witnesses, her work took on a happier, brighter style. Keane's website now advertises her work as having "tears of joy" or "tears of happiness".

George Benson

This Grammy-Award winning Jazz guitarist is another well-known Witness of Jehovah. Born and raised in Pennsylvania, where he began playing music outside a corner store at age seven, Benson’s accomplishments also include a triple platinum album (Breezin’) and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Unlike many of his contemporaries, Benson enjoyed making music that is about love and romance, but without the crudeness often present in such lyrics. In this, as well as in the healthy relationship he’s maintained with his beloved wife Johnnie Lee since the 60’s, Benson is a shining example of how fame and fortune need not turn one away from serving Jehovah.

Brother Benson started to study the Bible in the 1970's after his beloved cousin was tragically murdered. In an online interview, George explained how he learned the Truth: ”For me [studying with Jehovah's Witnesses] answered a lot of my questions about life and another thing about going to different churches was I got a chance to see how other people think so none of that was wasted. I had a chance to see what motivated other people so the value was still there. My mother took me to all these different places to learn about religion in general and for me the thing that I was looking for was found with the Jehovah's Witnesses. They are very demanding in that they stick to bible principles and they do not waiver from it. I like that about them more than anything else.” He was baptized in 1979.

Brother Benson is now 71 years old and has been faithfully serving Jehovah for some 36 years.

Ida Eisenhower

If the first thing that comes to mind when you see the name Eisenhower is the former U.S. president, you are on the right track. Ida was the mother of Dwight Eisenhower, considered by many to be one of the greatest presidents in the nation’s history, but she was also an accomplished woman in her own right. As a young woman growing up in Kansas in the 1800’s, she was discouraged from going to high school, but she did so anyway and even went on to graduate from Lane University. She was a part of the early history of our faith, as she joined the International Bible Students in the 1890’s, a group that would soon be known as the Jehovah’s Witnesses. Her home would be a frequent meeting place for the group. Having raised four children, including Dwight and Milton – the latter would go on to become president of Kansas State University, Pennsylvania State University and John Hopkins University – Ida was named Kansas Mother of the Year in 1945.

Sister Eisenhower is briefly mentioned in the article, ”A Soldier Who Became a Preacher” October 15, 1980 pp. 25-26.

Leopold Engleitner

Before passing away in 2013, Engleitner was known as the oldest male survivor of the Holocaust. He is the subject of the documentaries Unbroken Will and Ladder in the Lions' Den. Engleitner was baptized as one of Jehovah’s Witnesses in 1932 and, even before the rise of Nazi Germany, faced intolerance from his Austrian countrymen for this. His treatment in concentration camps was such that he dwindled down to 54 pounds and was released only when he submitted to a life of slavery. Two years later, he was forcibly enlisted in the German army. Choosing not to fight, he hid in rural mountains and was hunted by Nazi soldiers, but never caught. The courage to remain steadfast in his faith despite imprisonment and torment makes him a great example of what it truly means to be steadfast.

Brother Engleitner's life story appeared in the article: ”Though Weak, I Am Powerful”, May 1, 2005 pp. 23-28. The documentary Ladder in the Lions' Den can is available online from Ministry Ideaz here: http://www.ministryideaz.com/VLLD

    8. I have seen Prince on various talk shows. I have watched him preach on David Letterman. I have seen his concerts where he protests the cross and stake as somebody lied. Cross no . He named his concert that in Greek. I have seen him walk off a talk show because a women host was sexually aggressive towards him. Just walk away. He came back at a later date and the behavior of the hosts. The Talk on CBS. Was totally different. I don't know his family life , I only know what I personally have seen. I don't listen to gossip. I believe that this man is doing thirst he can do and Jehovah sees it and knows it. And that's all he expects. This chat about Prince almost sounds like a witch hunt. Be careful or you may lose out not Prince. Check yourselves first. Leave the rest to Jehovah.

    9. I hope and pray that he has not been swallowed up by Satan.

If he did some things that Jehovah dissaproves, then let's hope and pray he accepted scriptural councel. As we know that Jehovah would make sure he received councel.

We know that Jehovah is aware of all of our conduct. And we so all need councel, daily.

One performance, is not necessarily proof that he no longer wants to serve Jehovah.

It is not fair to Jehovah, Jesus, the angels, the annointed, the great crowd or even Prince when we judge them.

Praying for anyone that is about to, or has taken a false step, is the most loving thing we can do. And it gives us the glue to stick together as Jehovah's united people.

We want no one to lose out on everlasting life. We want everyone to serve Jehovah. And when we pray for others, we assist them to do the right thing.

Especially as we do not know the entire situation. If he could have made other choices during his SNL performance, we are sure he will make wiser choices next time.

As Jehovah sees him, we want to also. And knowing that any discipline Jehovah gave him, was the correct discipline, and believing that he accepted and applied it.

He was not a dedicated, baptized, active preacher of righteousness, putting on the new personality; just a child of a Witness mother, like a lot of people who are in the entertainment industry.

    3. He was an active preacher in the mid 80's. Came to my congregation a couple of different times and was friends with many of the brothers and sisters inour congregation going on camping trips. Attended my circuit assembly two rows ahead of me and also knew the Elder who studied with him at the Woodland Hills Congregation. 12. @Carla Caruso. The bible says not to call ANYONE a friend who was once a brother. You are doing exactly what Jehovah said not to do. I don't call anyone my friend that has made the decision to leave Jehovah and dally in false religion and pagan holidays. He became deeply involved in Budahism and became involved in the Muslim belief. He actually followed Them for some time. So, you're telling me that a brother can leave Jehovah's organization , get involved in false religion, take part in pagan holidays and still be ok In Jehovah's eyes? True, we can't read his heart but we can see his actions and he was not standing for Jehovah that's for sure.

      Delete
    13. How about we all stop speculating, talking about and/or judging others? You may not be there to see if they make it there.

      Delete
    14. Just a thought about who will be resurrected or not: We on earth, the anointed first and then the other sheep have been given an assignment by Jehovah through His son, Jesus, to accomplish a huge preaching and disciple making work in the earth before the end. Jehovah assigned His son, Jesus, to be judge as to whom will be given a resurrection into His 1,000 year reign. Jesus doesn't come down and do preaching work, neither should we try to judge whether a person will be resurrected or not. Even a disfellowshipped person, or disassociated person as Michael Jackson was, could have become truly repentant in his/her heart and quit practicing the bad things he was doing and died before anyone but Jesus knew of his change.

      Delete
    15. There is one simple thing you need to remember !!!!When we die, we are saved from our sins we have committed. That's what Jesus did for us. If we get a resurrection, we must prove ourselves and give answer to Jehovah.

      Delete
    16. Jehovah sent Jesus to teach us what we should do and not do. Matthew 24: 14 and Matthew 28: 19, 20 is recorded for us to do. To say who will or not be resurrected is none of or business. So, let's stay in our lane, and be thankful that Jehovah chose us to be in his lane.

      Delete
    17. It is my understanding that because he followed other religions after leaving Jehovah by choice that he is an apostate. He cannot be referred to as a friend of Jehovah, nor as our friend. At this point it is in Jehovah's hands as to what is to happen regarding him. Remember Solomon from the bible died in a disapproved state and would not be referred to as Jehovah's friend.

      Delete
    18. Our publications have stated that Solomon would likely be resurrected. Being disfellowshipped is NOT punishment--it serves 2 purposes: 1. Discipline the offender and 2. Protect the congregation. There is no reason at all to believe that disfellowshipped people will not be resurrected. Thorough research on the DVD-ROM will verify this.

ALL WHITE AND NOT A SMALL RESEMBLANCE TO HIM.HE USED TO TALK AGAINST THE ORG.WAS VERY FRIENDLY TO WORLDLY PEOPLE EVEN SEEKING ADVISE FROM THEM, SPECIALLY ELIZABETH TAYLOR INSTEAD OF LOOKING FOR JEHOVAH'S ADVISE FROM HIS MOTHER AT LEAST.AND WE MUST REMEMBER JUDAS. AND READ HEB;6:4-6. SIN AGAINST JEH.THE HOLLY SPIRIT AND JESUS AND ALL THE RUMORS ABOUT CHILD MOLESTER? WE SHOULD BE CAREFUL WHO WE CALL FRIEND.JESUS SAID,MY MOTHER BROTHERS AND SISTERS ARE THESE WHO DO MY FATHER'S WILL.READ MATT;12:46-50.AND THE RESURRECTION IS NOT ONLY FOR THOSE WHO DID NOT KNEW JEHOVAH, MANY WHO KNEW HIM A LITTLE AND FOR WHATEVER REASON DIDNOT CONTINUE STUDYING AND GOT BAPTIZED,HAD PAID FOR THEIR SINS.BECAUSE THEY HAD NOT SIN AGAINST THE HOLLY SPIRIT. ALSO JESUS SAID ANY SIN AGAINST ME WILL BE FORGIVEN, BUT NOT AGAINST THE HOLLY SPIRIT. AND ALSO WHEN COMPARED NINEVEH,SODOM AND GOMORRAH AGAINST JERUSALEM, HE SAID IT WILL BE EASIER FOR THEM IN THE DAY OF JUDGEMENT. MEANING IN THE NEW SYSTEM. SO I EXORT TO STOP TRYING TO THINK AND GO AGAINST GOD'S PURPOSE BECAUSE HE IS THE ONLY ONE WITH THE RIGHT TO DECIDE ON EACH ONE.WE ARE NOT TO SUGGEST, THINK WHAT MAYBE WILL HAPPEN OR CONCLUDE WHEN WE DON'T KNOW A PERSON LIFE COMPLETELY.LET'S JUST HOPE THAT WE GET THE PRICE TO BE THERE.WE STILL NEED TO FIGHT FOR OUR LIVES AND THE ONES WHO ARE WILLING TO LISTEN.THOSE IN DEATH ARE ALREADY JUDGE.

He got up from his seat and almost walked off the show. On another talk show, the host asked Prince about a party they went to 30 years ago. Prince refused to answer the question and changed the subject. And when he does a concert, he refuses to sing the immoral songs that made him millions. So we can see that our dear brother is striving to live by Bible teachings.

    6. Sadly, the only interviews where he preaches end in about 2010 or 2011. After that, he did Arsenio when he was back on air. Had his old aymbol back and quite a big fro. No preaching at all. Also Halftime at Superbowl a few yrs back, symbol guitar back again. Not more understated as before. Sang some of his song with bad lyrics which he had previously stopped. So let's not judge the Brother however. Our asking shows we care. Let's pray he finds his way back if he is in fact lost. Jah knows and will listen. Agape'💜

    7. He was on the Talk in 2015. He walked off when Sheri sexually and aggressive behavior. He returned at a later date to a whole different behavior of the five hosts. He when given the opportunity will declare openly and with glee he is a Jehovah's Witness and he tries his best in that crazy world to behave with Jehovah in mind, I personally see a good witness in him. He uses his celebrity to minister when given chance.

We meaning our Congregation would serve as the host congregation whenever MichaelJ was in town! He did not get disfellowshipped for Thriller he was repentant and reproved for it!However so sad eventually he gave in to he pressure of the world the flesh and the Devil and he wrote a letter to the Brothers at Bethel and Disassociating himself! This is factual!!!! We do not have power or status with Jehovah our God to say who he will and will not show mercy to! WE have learned he extends great mercy when he deems it necessary and he is the reader of hearts! OUr concern is to Pray that we all hold fast and make it! OUr hope is a great one we can always hope and pray for others and pour out our heart out to Jehovah esp when we are puzzled about things and then just wait! No need for speculation about who will and will not be ressurected! IT is only Jehovah God the giver of life who makes that decision! May we all just exert ourselves vigiourously to greet our loved ones who will be expecting us in the New System! All written in LOve!

We all have a weakness that we will continue to battle until the new system. What brother Nelson weaknesses are is between him and Jehovah to work out. Remember the Isralites messed up all the time and was forgiven. Only Jehovah knows when he will forgive no more. All we can do is pray for our brothers and sisters if we see them doing something that bothers us. Until Jehovah removes that person from the organization for gross conduct and failure to repent we are to love and pray for one another. If you feel you need to watch your association with a brother or sister is between you and Jah, but always remember at the end of the day Jehovah is the only and final Judge not man. I love you all.

    1. Very well said. We should make our brothers and sisters burdens lighter as we do not know what they are facing to keep serving Jehovah God. Enough we all have having to deal with other matters...we all are seeking to get into the promised new system...one help another to get there and Jah and Jesus has the final decision. Just like that. We just need to keep it and do our best to receive this premium.

  24. I agree. "Famous" people to me are people like Noah, Abraham, Sarah, David, Ruth, Naomi, TImothy, Paul, and the list goes on.

  26. What about a famous inventor, wealthy because of success in Dritz / Scovil Sewing products, Jewish ethnic background. John Dritz and sons family business. Was a traveling lecturer from Bethel. His name was Arthur Dritz, wife was Rose. I personally met him when he gave a talk at Maryland K. H. It was entitled " The march of the 7 World powers of Bible History" Lexington Park, Maryland. He also was an inventor of many board games, that sold. He died in New York, City.

  27. Also, Del Graham... Larry Grahams mother was an entertainer. She was a faithful sister who regular pioneered. She was a faithful servant of Jehovahs and a very dear friend of mine, she remained faithful to her death.

  28. if Mrs. Eisenhower can make the list--then why wasn't Micheal Jackson's mother on the list. look at all the trials she had to deal with--abusive husband, almost every child not sticking to the truth. but she is still hanging in there.

  30. I think of all the comments as a spiritually filled group session amongst my Brothers & Sisters to be encouraging and upbuilding. I was feeling low because of health issues and reading the comments reminded me of all Jehovah's promises to continue to fill us with the power beyond what is normal. Let's all stay spiritually fit to run this race to the finish.

  31. I heard that several years ago the Nelsons were JWs, but I don't think they remained active.Perhaps someon else knows more about them....As for Teresa Graves, my family and I had the privilege of seeing her in person at the assembly hall in Yuba City, California back in the mid 70s.It was a Special meeting where she told how she first became a JW. Later in her life her house caught on fire and she died in that fire.I hope to see her when she comes back in the resurrection.

    1. I likewise had the opportunity to be present at a Special Malawi Letter Writing meeting in Rochester, NY where Sister Theresa Graves was used to direct the media to the atrocities meted out to our spiritual family in that country. It was heartrending and entertaining when she recounted how and who aided her into the Truth. The entire occasion is something I'll never forget...not because she was a "celebrity" but because she was my beautiful pioneer sister. Years later when my District Overseer announced at our circuit assembly that she was killed in a house fire, he encouraged us all to stay faithful to welcome her back in the resurrection.

  32. I want to comment on the false accusation that Ministry Ideas is run by Apostates. I have not seen this even though I am a member of a Facebook group called KINGDOM FRIENDSHIP...it is run soley by JWs and they are very fastidious about making sure nothing derogatory gets put on their site. However, there are many other "JW" sites on Facebook that may have had a post on their sites. Then it could be spread like wildfire all around the world.
If I do see it on any site, I will be glad to try to stop its spread and notify you of its site.

  33. Coco Rocha (wikepedia) has been a devout Jehovah's Witness since childhood, and in a 2013 interview stated that she still participates with Jehovah's Witnesses in their model of Jesus' preaching work of going preaching door-to-door to share the Bible with others. She calls herself "a Christian first and a model second", and says that due to her faith she will not pose nude, with cigarettes, nationalistic emblems or religious icons.

  34. Because of their fame and lifestyles, many celebrities struggle with life. These ones really need the Truth to bring them real happiness and purpose in life, but Jehovah will draw them to Him if He sees fit. It all comes down to their heart condition, spiritually.

  35. Years ago I was told we all have to work to pay our way.
If we have a talent how we use it IS a matter of conscience.(Ours & others.)
This system is manipulated as part of the Devils seed which all of us have to contend with in different ways.
Maintaining our integrity & being wholesouled in our love for Jehovah is something which should be paramount in our lives.

  37. Elmore Smith, former NBA basketball player, and Mike Pruitt, former NFL football player, are both faithful, dedicated, baptized JW's. I heard, but was never able to verify, that both Sade and Angela Davis studied. But bottom line is that, although it can be encouraging to hear about JW's who are famous and faithful as difficult as that can be in the wicked system, what's most important and vital is for each of us to try to remain faithful and to be well-known to Jehovah and Jesus.

  38. I think what I appreciate most after reading these comments, is that I am sure glad that judging is up to Jehovah, I just pray that as Paul said "I don't do anything to get disapproved somehow" All glory and honor belong to Jehovah. May Jehovah bless all of our Brothers!!

  40. Many of these comments were obviously posted prior to Bro Nelson's death. It we must all remember that we are ALL "works in progress"; that Prince had many bad habits and beliefs before he came to know Jehovah. Aren't we all glad for Jehovah's patience and forebearance, putting up with US until we can all "get it right"? Aren't we all glad for the gift of a thousand years to actually GET IT RIGHT? Prince is dead, he will NO DOUBT get a resurrection and teach any who want to learn the guitar, (the way it should be played). Romans 6:7,23...

  41. One brother of ours who is currently serving as an elder in Las Vegas was quite famous in the mid 1960's, having his picture in every rock music & teen magazine in the country, also, on TV everyday for about two years: Phil "Fang" Volk, the original bassist and vocalist of the band "Paul Revere & the Raiders". Also, his wife Tina Mason, was the lead female vocalist on the Dick Clark's "Where the Action Is" program for over a year. See Google.

  42. Eve Arden, the screen star was NOT one of JWs. She has been dead for a number of years now. The rumor was going around many years ago when my wife and I were living near Detroit. She starred in a performance in Detroit, so we went to it and then waited for her to come out so that we could talk to her. I asked her about the rumor and she said that she was NOT. She said there is (or was) another Eve Arden in California and she often is mistaken for her. That ends that rumor.

  44. Selena, the singer who was murdered by the president of her fan club was a witness, in fact her parents are very faithful witnesses; Larry Graham is a faithful brother and singer (I believe he introduced the truth to Prince - when I was at Bethel in Newyork visiting, he was also there visiting); Michael Jackson's mother is a faithful witness as is his oldest sister Reebie
