Back to School: Prayer Helps to Start This Year Off Right!

September is the month of a new teacher and a new grade, new shoes and new school supplies… a fresh start for parents and kids. It's also a month of mixed emotions. We all remember the feelings we experienced at the start of a school year. There was always the worry about whether the new teacher would be “nice” or if we would have friends with whom we could play and eat lunch. And for us as Jehovah's Witnesses, there are the worries of peer-pressure and many faith-challenging situations that will undoubtedly come up.

During the back-to-school season, it’s essential to remind ourselves and our children that prayer helps us endure trials of faith and is one of the best forms of encouragement. When you’re wondering how to start the school year off right, remember that the Bible encourages us to confide in Jehovah through prayer.

Philippians 4:6, 7

“Do not be anxious over anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication along with thanksgiving, let your petitions be made known to God; and the peace of God that surpasses all understanding will guard your hearts and your mental powers by means of Christ Jesus.”

Prayer gives us the opportunity to express both our concerns and our gratitude and grow closer to our Heavenly Father as we express our deepest thoughts and feelings. When planning some start-of-school-year activities, it’s a good idea to prepare some of your favorite verses for your children. Praying to God with and for your children is essential for helping your children build faith, face trials and learn to talk to Jehovah themselves through prayer when faith-challenging situations come up.
