Top Ten Things I Tell Myself When I’m Discouraged...

Whether we are talking about marriage, parenting, homeschooling, friendships, family or work, we always need to be encouraging. Encouragement often involves commending a person for something he or she did well. We can also be encouraging by reassuring others that they have good qualities or by speaking “consolingly to those who are depressed.” (1 Thessalonians 5:14)

However, more often than not, it is we ourselves that have the need for encouragement. Discouragement is something we all face daily. Sometimes, the encouragement we need may not be readily forthcoming. People who should know better may belittle or berate us. I myself, have been a victim of such comments quite often, particularly with the business we are in as the owners of Ministry Ideaz.

However, here are some of the ‘little things’ I try to tell myself each day. I try to let these scriptures affect my daily life: my attitude, my heart condition, my thought processes:

1. Feel Joy

Nehemiah 8:10
“The joy of Jehovah is your stronghold”

2. This too shall pass

2 Corinthians 4:18
“The things seen are temporary, but the things unseen are everlasting.”

3. Think before you speak

James 1:19
“Be quick to listen, slow to speak”

4. Jehovah loves me

Romans 8:38, 39
“I am convinced that ... [no] creation will be able to separate us from God’s love.”

5. Jehovah is here with me

Isaiah 40:10
“I am your God. I will fortify you, yes, I will help you, I will really hold on to you with my right hand of righteousness.”

6. I do not have to worry

Matthew 6:34
“So never be anxious about the next day.”

7. Patience is love

1 Corinthians 13:4
“Love is patient”

8. I can trust Jehovah’s purpose

Jeremiah 29:11
“‘I well know the thoughts that I am thinking toward you,’ declares Jehovah, ‘thoughts of peace, and not of calamity, to give you a future and a hope.’”

9. Hope in Jehovah

Psalm 27:14
“Hope in Jehovah; Be courageous and strong of heart. Yes, hope in Jehovah.”

10. Keep doing good

Galatians 6:9, 10
“Let us not give up in doing what is fine, [...] let us work what is good toward all.”

I hope this list of texts helps you as much as it helps me. Keeping God’s Word at the forefront of my day goes a long way in helping me stay focused on His loving care rather than the pulls of this life and the stinging words of others. A Watchtower article article that I’ve never forgotten is entitled “You are Precious in God’s Eyes!” (see the April 1st, 1995 Watchtower) If you ever suffer from negative feelings, please re-read this article from over 20 years ago! Here is a beautiful quote from that magazine:

“If life in this system has taught you to see yourself as an obstacle too daunting even for God’s immense love to surmount, or your good works as too insignificant even for his all-seeing eyes to notice, or your sins as too vast even for the death of his precious Son to cover, you have been taught a lie. Reject such lies with all the repugnance that they deserve!” April 1st, 1995 Watchtower, page 15, paragraph 21

Taking the time to apply the above verses is challenging, time-involved, but oh, so worth it!... and a bonus, because this is the promise that will bring us through any life struggle…

11. With God ALL Things Are Possible

Matthew 19:26
“With men this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.”

Let’s all try to being as encouraging as possible! Do you have any more you can add to this list? Please let me know in the comments below!

  1. Thank you very good reminders and scriptures! I also love: Is. 30:18 "Jehovah is waiting patiently to show you favor" , I think the Sovereign of the Universe is Patiently Waiting for anything??How beautiful that he is lovingly patiently waiting to show us favor -- and that we can in turn patiently wait for the time to come when his name will be fully vindicated and that favor will come in waves of peace and joy on this beautiful earth!

  2. Thank you for those wonderful reminders and scriptures!! Yes, sometimes we can be our own worst enemies; and the friends, although they mean well, don't always express themselves in an encouraging way. We cannot let Satan win!! :) Thank you!! Keep on keeping on!! :) This blog/article made my day!!

  6. Ephesians 3:20&21--"Now to the one who can, according to his power that is operating in us, do more than superabundantly beyond all the things we ask or conceive, to him be the glory by means of the congregation & by means of Christ Jesus to all generations forever and ever. Amen." Love the talk on this from the Annual Meeting from 2016. I have memorized these scriptures, & use them daily in prayer to Jehovah. He can & will do everything for us, & he deserves praise for this.

  11. This was so beautiful, considerate & timely. Thank you for encouraging us. It warms my heart. As Philippians 2:3,4 says: "Do nothing out of contentiousness or out of egotism, but with humility consider others superior to you, as you look out not only for your own interests, but also for the interests of others."

  15. Dear brothers, These words of comfort are perfect words indeed. We have many brothers in prison in Korea, I have written a copy and sent them to these brothers. I thank you once again for helping me find the right scriptures to send on. Warmest Christian Love, Julie Connor

  16. It took a lot of time & effort to put this together for your friends. Jehovah loves you and we love you for showing us the same love. Your Facebook page and Ministry Ideaz business are innovative, creative, positive, and has Jehovah's backing. Remember, your business is not different from any other Witness owned printing & supply company that furthers the interest of Jehovah's Kingdom. The same miserable murmurers will miss it 1st, they should show appreciation & not murmur.
