Thoughtful Ways to Encourage Pioneers—Beyond Just Giving a Gift

A handwritten appreciation card, a small wrapped gift and a notebook on a kitchen table

Sometimes the nicest encouragement comes in a very small package. A handwritten note. A homemade lunch. An invitation to spend an afternoon together in the ministry. Or perhaps a little gift that says, “We appreciate everything you do.”

Whether someone is preparing for Pioneer Service School, has been pioneering for years, or could simply use a little encouragement, there are plenty of thoughtful ways to show we care. And happily, most of them don't require a big budget—or an elaborate plan.

๐ŸŽ A good gift doesn't have to be expensive. The most memorable part is often the personal thought behind it, not the price tag.

Start With the Person, Not the Present

Before choosing a gift, think about the person receiving it. Do they enjoy practical things? Are they always taking notes? Would they appreciate an afternoon together more than another item for their desk?

A pioneer who spends long days on the go might appreciate a useful travel mug or an organized notebook. Someone who already has every ministry accessory imaginable might enjoy a home-cooked meal or a handwritten message instead.

The point is not to find the perfect gift. It's to make someone feel remembered.

Five Simple Ways to Show Appreciation

1. Write a note that's personal. Instead of simply writing “Thank you for pioneering,” mention something you genuinely appreciate. Perhaps they've been a dependable service partner, offered encouragement during a difficult time, or set a good example through their kindness.

2. Share a meal. A relaxed lunch, an invitation for dinner, or a few homemade treats can be a lovely gesture. It doesn't have to be fancy. In fact, some of the nicest conversations happen around a kitchen table with mismatched mugs.

3. Spend time together in the ministry. Sometimes the most meaningful encouragement is simply being available. Making plans to work together, especially when someone might otherwise be alone, can be a practical way to show support.

4. Offer a little practical help. Depending on the person's circumstances, a ride, assistance with an errand, or help preparing for a busy week may be more useful than a wrapped present.

5. Give a small, useful gift. A pen, notebook, greeting card, bookmark, or other modest item can make a thoughtful surprise—especially when accompanied by a personal message.

๐Ÿ’Œ The personal-note trick: If you're unsure what to write, finish this sentence: “One thing I've always appreciated about you is…” A few sincere words can mean more than a long, polished message.

A Little Encouragement for Pioneer Service School

For someone attending Pioneer Service School, a thoughtful gesture can add to an already memorable experience.

A small notebook, a pen, or a card signed by friends can be a practical keepsake. Another idea is to put together a simple care package with a few favorite snacks, stationery and an encouraging note.

If several friends want to contribute, they could each write a short message in a card or keepsake book. That creates something personal without requiring anyone to spend very much.

And there's no need for every gift to be a surprise. Asking what someone would actually find useful is perfectly fine!

Informal Pioneer Appreciation Gatherings

In some congregations, friends enjoy organizing informal meals or get-togethers to express appreciation for pioneers. These are personal arrangements, not a required congregation event, and there's no need to turn them into an elaborate production.

A potluck meal can make hosting easier. Everyone brings something, the host doesn't spend the whole day in the kitchen, and there is usually enough food left over to feed a small army.

A few simple touches can make the gathering memorable: handwritten place cards, a group photograph, a card signed by those attending, or a small takeaway gift.

๐Ÿฒ Hosting tip: Keep the preparation lighter than the occasion. A simple meal with time for conversation is often better than a complicated menu that leaves the host exhausted.

When Several People Want to Give Together

Group gifts can be a practical option when friends would like to express appreciation together.

A few people might contribute toward a useful item, assemble a basket of small gifts, or create a collection of handwritten notes. Contributions should be entirely voluntary, and a thoughtful group gesture doesn't need to be expensive.

It can also help to consider whether the recipient would prefer something private rather than public attention. Not everyone enjoys being the center of a surprise presentation!

Don't Wait for a Special Occasion

Pioneer School, a service-year milestone, or a gathering may provide a natural opportunity to give a gift. But encouragement doesn't need a date on the calendar.

An unexpected card on an ordinary Tuesday, an invitation to lunch, or an offer to work together in the ministry can be just as meaningful.

๐Ÿ˜Š A little reminder: Appreciation isn't a once-a-year project. Sometimes the best encouragement arrives on a completely ordinary day.
